Portland Fashion Photographer: Polaroids + Lookbooks

Whew! No new outfit posts quite yet, but I did some collaborate styling for an editorial shoot with Boon Rodriguez last week and will post some of those photos once they are released.
What I do have to share is my 1 line wish list, which is this fabulous "polaroid" aka instant camera by FUJI.

I have been dying to incorporate a touch of film to my shoots. I have a roll from a Holga STILL lying around from years ago, so I figure actual film-film is not my thang. I'll do better to have some insta-fun in my hands. My anniversary is a couple weeks away AND my birthday is in May so chances of this showing up with a little blue bow are high.

Bookings and gigs have been crazy lately. Crazy good. I just finished shooting a fashion film for Ms Wood that will be featured in the Fade to Light fashion show this month. I'm ecstatic about this film and can't be more happy with the collaborative effort it took to make it happen. I also just booked 3 lookbook shoots... One with Tied Up + Tousled, The Portland Garment Factory House Line, and Shop Adorn. Additionally, I'm shooting a promotional campaign for Phagans this Spring, so we are in the pre-productions stages for that. Oh! And I met with the fabulous designer, Shannon Welsh, who is itching to shoot a fashion film this Spring/Summer so who's to tell what's in store for us there!

It's busy season and I will blog a little less, but my facebook page is a great place to keep up on casting notices and booking updates. Can't wait to share some pretty photos/ films in the months to come!

Portland Fashion Photographer: Men's Fashion

Being a fashion photographer in Portland, I haven't touched into Men's fashion but a handful of times. My first Men's lookbook Homeboy, was shot in NYC for Solestruck this summer and I found that working with a great team allowed me to focus on the shoots. In the end it felt like any other fabulous set- the people and collaboration bringing it all to excecution.

Here is a recent test with international model, Trevor Cross. He contacted me last year before leaving the states, but we weren't able to connect until his recent holiday home.

Portland Fashion Photographer: Portland's Pretty FEATURE

Meet Marissa Sullivan of Portland's Pretty. She is a fashion blogger I first met and photographed nearly two years ago. Marissa is a warm, funny girl with a self-proclaimed NW send of style.
Her blog captures and reports a large percentage of the indie fashion scene in Portland and her casual approach gives her the opportunity to post frequently. Not only that, but she is a babe HERSELF! I was excited to shoot her for our first installment of "Fashion's Night In" which is in collaboration with Rhapsody Boutique and features fashionista's from all walks of life. Check back or subscribe for our bi-monthly Blog feature of Rhapsody's Blog and recaps to be seen here.

What was the best style advice you received and who gave it to you? This has stuck with me since I read it: ”I don’t hate anything in fashion. Everything is okay as long as you do it with enough conviction. Hating on stuff is what causes mediocrity and conformism. It makes people nervous and cautious and they start reining in their flamboyant impulses. So you could say ‘I hate hating.” – Simon Doonan

Portland Fashion Photographer: First things First

Sometimes facebook and our internet personalities freak me out. I look over- let's say a personal friend's page- and see all these happy, smiling faces when I know in fact that she is going through a tough time at home. Her mom could be dying, but come on- if it's a public profile, that personal event may not ever be shared...

It affects us terribly to consume this warped view of "the other side" where the grass will always be greener on someone else's wall. We are striving for this new age, digital mirage and it's just heartbreaking.

I think I am always rediscovering things, because I'm pretty sure I figured this out before and yet, it feels new this time around. So yeah, I'll call it a rediscovery; I am discovering that taking care of our home lives is incredibly important. I think it starts even closer than that though. I think it starts with ourselves.

So many of us extend our false realities beyond facebook into our cliques, our work place, or our church. And inso doing this we crowd out the true reality- possibly even replacing it. There have been several times I've found myself spending too much time at work, or at promotional events (you can also insert things like community groups or charities if that's your thang) while all the while I am neglecting my own reality, my real life and thus those with whom I'm closest.

This Christmas I am excited to take a couple weeks off for the holidays to slow down, enjoy the holidays, love on my daughter... maybe bake a little. But most importantly, I look forward to sitting still and living, truly living my one true life.

Portland Fashion Photographer: My Desk Top

This is a snapshot of my desktop today. Today is a bit wonky because I was awake till 6am with a sick little girl, so I decided to sort of take today off and sleep, work, blog...

Photobucket

These images are from a recent test I did with local actress, Aja. She hired me to take her headshots earlier this summer and when she arrived for the shoot I immediately thought, Wow, here's a model. So... a few months later and here we are. She hadn't ever modeled previous to this, so I wanted to see how she moves, her angles, her expressions.

Looking over the final film, I was pretty impressed... what do you think?

Portland Fashion Photographer: We Shoot Video Too

The plan was to become a fashion photographer. In Portland. (Ahem). An impossible feat some may say. But has been the plan... With the introduction of pro-sumer SLR's a few years back, fashion videos have become the latest standard for designers and clothing stores as well. Now, I am no longer just a fashion photographer, I am also a budding fashion film-maker.

Check out my latest fashion film shot for FORTYEIGHT's new site.

Portland Fashion Photographer: Rhapsody Trunk Show

I had so much fun at the Rhapsody Boutique Trunk Show, where Sahlia Jewelry, Ms. Wood, Clair Vintage Inspired, Tart and Maple XO presented Portland shoppers an opportunity to jump start their holiday shopping!
Zanita, Rhapsody's shop owner, set up an intimate party atmosphere with live music, snacks and a wine bar. I wasn't sure if I should be shopping, or curled up on the shop couch with a book and glass of pinot. That woman knows how to throw a soiree!
Here are some shots of the goodies (which can still be found at the shop) offered at the show, including cozy sweaters, locally made jewelry and more - pieces perfect to add to your winter wardrobe! If you weren't at the show, I hope you get a chance to stop by to snag any of the following:

Catalog: Hello Eliza

Did I forget to mention that I met and fell in love with one of my favorite designers, Eliza Harrison of Hello Eliza, just earlier this year? What started as a casual work meeting has turned into a full fledged fashion collaboration. While I place my little pinkies to my mouth and chuckle villainously, I must type a  "TO BE CONTINUED" clause here. (Some secret FASHION plans you'll bite your lip over are in the works... ) A little hint: Think Street.
We got together and shot Eliza's first official lookbook this summer, as well as her catalog shots of her 2012 collection. Her mantra "From Skid Row to Front Row" describes perfectly this personalized prints collection. Where else can you find cannabis leaves next to a revolver and a not-so-mickey mouse?
Here is a screen shot of her shop. I will be doing some re-edits on the actual editorial before claiming bragging rights there, but please do shop away in the meantime! The little mice do no bite.

Deja Vu Fashion Show

Shot my first official "event" for my much beloved, Solestruck. The gals contacted me a couple weeks before the event and since I was planning on seeing the show AND planning to bring my camera, it seemed like fate! I have to say... having permission to act like an invasive, weirdo at a show- (I mean, HELLO- who doesn't want a free pass to stalk the fashionables and take their picture?) is A for awesome. Of course, my client being a SHOE store, I found myself crawling around the floor half the night grabbing shots of people's shoes. But who can complain? The shoes were to die for. Here are just a few grab-shots I took. You can see actual photos of the show here.

Portland Fashion Photographer: Amy Stewart

I first met Amy Stewart on set, when she hired me to model for her beautiful jewelry line, Junghwa. I immediately wondered why Amy wasn't behind the lens herself and we jumped right into planning her styled portrait shoot. We decided to shoot this Designer Feature at Amy's own home in Vancouver, where she hand makes each piece of jewelry. Junghwa jewelry has been featured on Etsy frequently and her brand new site launches this summer.

Portland Fashion Photographer: Fashion Video

So excited to start working on my very FIRST fashion video! I'm in collaboration with Cassie Meder who will be doing most of the editing as I learn the ins and outs of PS Premiere, a video editing software system.
Anyhow... our first efforts look beautiful as individual shots so I wanted to give you guys some sneak peeks at the stills I captured:

Portland Fashion Photographer: Isaac Hers Portraits

I have been shooting for Isaac Hers for nearly a year now! The lovely owner, Barbara Seipp came up with the idea to shoot real customers in her clothes in each month for a weekly fashion post. It was meant to be a cross between street style and environmental portraiture.
Over time the project has morphed into this incredibly organized girls night, where women from all over Portland, including fashion icons, business owners and other influential women join us to style their own take on Isaac Her's latest designs.
Hope you'll take a look at her posts from our shoots here on the Isaac Hers Blog.

What a treat to work with Portland's well-known fashion editor, Eden Dawn! I was so excited to do a series with her that captured her in her own element at home. We had makeup and hair and styling all on set so that Eden and I could catch up on some of her work and background.

This busy girl just finished up a session with Katu as a guest judge for their program version of Project Runway and just last week was meeting up with Bobbi Brown for an interview!

My favorite part of getting a behind-the-scenes peek at "the" Eden Dawn, was discovering her entire walk-in boudoir glittering with self organized touches. (She actually inspired me to throw some sense into my own closet back home.) She likes to have everything out in the open, where she can see it and be inspired by each piece.
